In September 2003, Barre Savings Bank introduced a program designed to teach young children the virtues of saving, with the hopes of instilling in them a lifelong pattern of financial responsibility.

About the program
A Barre Savings Bank representative visits participating schools according to a pre-arranged schedule. During the allotted time period, we establish and accept deposits into an interest-earning passbook savings account in the student’s name. As part of the banking experience, the student receives incentives such as stickers, coin savers, age-appropriate financial education information, and other support materials as they become available. The student also receives a statement of earnings in the mail each January and June. Students may also come into the Bank at any time to deposit additional funds into their savings account.

To encourage students’ savings activity we reward monetary deposits into their account as follows:
$1 when the student opens his or her account
$2 when the student has saved $10
$3 when the student has saved $25

In addition, students who reach the $250 level are eligible to deposit that amount into a special Junior Certificate of Deposit, a 12-month CD which earns the interest rate in effect at that time.

By bringing the “BSB 1-2-3” to our local schools, Barre Savings Bank is helping today’s young people establish a lifelong habit of saving, and provides them with an appreciation for the importance of handling their money responsibly.
